When the temperature changes, colony managers may need to make new exceptions to their daily routine and TNR plans.
Here are some tips when dealing with El Paso weather events.
Summer Heat
When planning to TNR
- Trap in the evening, when the temperature is lower.
- Hold in a safe, temperature controlled space, like a cool spare room with A/C.
- Transport in an enclosed vehicle that is temperature controlled.
Colony Care
- Feed canned food if possible.
- Hydration is crucial.
- Use ice cubes, or freeze entire bowls of water, to provide to the cat all times to keep cats hydrated. The ice will likely melt quickly.
- Shade helps keep things cool. Leave their water in the shade.
- Large frozen bottles can act as cooling stations in shaded areas.
- Watered down areas in the yard that they like to lounge in can create cooler spaces for them as well
Monsoon Season
- Keep an eye on storms. Weather is unpredictable, use a weather app to be aware of incoming changes
- Adjust feeding times as necessary.
- Temperatures are typically high in El Paso, so feeding time is always best after sunset.
- Adjust feeding in the event of a storm
- Weigh things down so the wind doesn't blow dishes away.
- Use a clean brick or heavy rock to anchor items to the ground.
- Provide refuge for cats to seek during storms. Dog houses, garage, or even a tarp covering a small area.
- This will give shade from the heat, and shelter from rain or hail.
Cold Winters
- Winter shelters are the go to solution to keeping cats warm in cold weather
- Remember: hay is for horses, straw is for strays
- Straw repels moisture and reflects body heat, which makes it perfect insulation that will not get wet, moldy, or freeze.
- DO NOT use hay, towels, or blankets in shelters
