Cats reproduction ticks up in warmer seasons, and shelters get flooded with young kittens during these times. We call this Kitten Season.
In El Paso, kitten season starts early and ends late, sometimes stretching nearly year-round.
What you can do to prepare:
- Start TNR early before kittens are born
- Know what to do if you find a litter
- Connect with others in your area doing the same work
The more fixed cats we have before kitten season starts, the fewer litters we’ll have to rescue... or lose.
It’s natural to want to scoop up kittens the moment you see them.
But sometimes, waiting is the kindest thing you can do.
But sometimes, waiting is the kindest thing you can do.
Here’s what to check:
- Are the kittens clean, quiet, and warm?
- Mom is likely nearby. Watch from a distance.
- Are they dirty, cold, or crying?
- They may be abandoned or in distress.
If you intervene too early, you may orphan a litter unintentionally.
When in doubt:
- Wait and observe for at least a few hours
- Don’t remove healthy kittens unless absolutely necessary
Kittens have the best chance of survival with their mom.
